Some aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic furfurylidene ketones have been found to be hypergolic with red fuming nitric acid (RFNA). The correlation of hypergolicity with chemical structure has been attempted assuming that the pre-ignition reactions are mainly polymerization, nitration and oxidation. E

β¦ Synopsis
Syntheses of a few aliphatic furfurylidene ketones, a phenylhydrazone, and a N,N-dimethylhydrazone are reported. The compounds are characterized by their IR and NMR spectra. The ignition delay (ID) values of the compounds with RFNA are measured with and without polymerization and oxidation catalysts. It is noted that the ID values of aliphatic furfurylidene ketones with RFNA can be most effectively decreased by using H2SO 4 as catalyst. Formation of a N,N-dimethylhydrazone derivative is also useful to achieve the same purpose.
