✦ Synopsis
Poly(2-methyl-1,4-phenylene fumarate) and some poly-(Zmethyl-1 ,Cphenylene fumarate)block-(aliphatic unsaturated polyesters) have been prepared by interfacial polycondensation between fumaroyl chloride, 2-methyl-1,4-dihydroxy-benzene and a variable amount of the a,o-dichloro carbonyl oligomer corresponding
to the flexible unsaturated polyester block. The aliphatic unsaturated polyester was either a polyester with unsaturations in the main chain, poly(2-methyl-1,2-propanediyl fumarate), or a polyester with unsaturations in side groups, poly(oct-7ene-1,2-diyl adipate). The thermal behaviour of the polymers has been investigated by DSC, polarising microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Polymers with a rigid block content of 75% or above exhibited nematic mesophases after melting. The thermal crosslinking in the nematic state has been studied using IR spectroscopy. The copolymer containing unsaturations in side groups was much more reactive than those containing unsaturations in the main chain. The nematic texture was retained after crosslinking.
