normal Si-Si bond length has aroused much discussion as to the nature of the bonding between those Si a t o m ~. l ~* ~~ The remarkable consistency observed for series I1 implies that: 1) the shortening of the Si..-Si distance in I2 is due mainly to the short Si-0 (1.66 A) BL compared to other BD's in other compounds of this series and 2) the "effective" van der Waals radius of the Si atom along the direction toward the other Si atom is smaller than that normally estimated for this atom. This inference is admittedly simplistic, but the approximate homology rule appears to provide an instant, good estimate on the NBD of unknown silicon compounds.
