refer to a CC reference length of 1.572 8, based on bond lengths between quaternary C atoms in hydrocarbons, for example 1 ,I,-biadamantyl. This length, however, may not be regarded as a standard value for an unstrained CC single bond, yet is to be viewed as stretched due to nonbonding H . . . H repulsions. The C(sp')-C(sp2) shortening of 0.04 8, observed in 1,4cubanedicarboxylic acid arises exclusively from angle widening without involvement of nonbonding interactions. Consequently, our predicted shortening of 0.08 8, in 1 a and 2 [I] could meaningfully only refer to the usual standard length of an unstrained CC single bond of 1.54A. The shortenings measured in the meantime for l a and 2 (and I b) thus agree very satisfactorily with our prognosis. b) Coupled bicyclo[l.l.l]pentanes:
