✦ Synopsis


La &10.8 Nb 5 O 20 S 10 was obtained in an attempt to prepare the La homologue of the Sm 3 NbO 4 X 3 derivatives (X ‫؍‬ S, Se). Its structure was solved by X-ray di4raction on a single crystal, in the Immm space group with cell parameters a ‫؍‬ 32.535(8) A > , b ‫؍‬ 12.115(3) A > , and c ‫؍‬ 3.9999(3) A > . Re5nement of 58 parameters using 836 unique re6ections with I'2 (I) converged to R 1 ‫؍‬ 5.09% and wR 2 ‫؍‬ 10.87%. The structure of La &10.8 Nb 5 O 20 S 10 can be schematically described as the stacking of [La 2 S 2 ] slabs of rock salt type (two-atom-thick layers) pillared by an intricate assembly of La and Nb polyhedra along the a-direction. Within this complex part, one of the La sites (La5) is partially occupied.
