✦ Synopsis
The synthesis of macromonomer-like lignin residue by grafting polymerizable groups, under conditions of phase-transfer catalysis, has been investigated on models of lignin units bearing various hydroxylic functions. Anchoring of allylic, vinylether and styrenic groups proceeds cleanly. Although all the hydroxylic functions examined are potentially active, unsubstituted phenols are much more reactive than substituted and also more reactive than aliphatic alcohols. Preliminary attempts at copolymerization of a vinylether-modified lignin residue with ethylvinylether show that the nature of the resulting copolymer strongly depends on the number of polymerizable functions per lignin residue.
