A stable pentacoordinate bismuth compound ( ring was synthesized. Reaction of ;t with sulfuryl $

) with a five-membered ch oride afforded a novel stable compound <$,) with a covalent B1-Cl bond. The compound was useful for the synthesis of other hypervalent bismuth compounds with different Bi-C bonds such as kc, and the selectivity in the chlorination of 4~ was described.
