✦ Synopsis
The complex of Ni(bpy) 2 dppz 2/ (where dppz is the planar ligand dipyrido [3,2-a: 2,3-c] phenazine) was synthesized. The binding of Ni(bpy) 2 dppz 2/ to calf thymus DNA was investigated using UV absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, DNA melting, and electrophoresis measurements. The results show that the complex is intercalated into the double helix of DNA, and the binding constant K was determined. The complex is also shown to be a more efficient photosensitizer for single-strand breaks in plasmid DNA.
