โœฆ Synopsis

New strontium iron(II) orthophosphates, SrFe 2 (PO 4 ) 2 and Sr 9 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 7 , were synthesized by the solid state method at 1170 K. They were characterized by X-ray powder di4raction, thermal analysis in air, magnetic susceptibility, and the IR and MoK ssbauer spectroscopy methods. MoK ssbauer spectroscopy con-5rmed the presence of only Fe 2ุ‰ cations in both compounds. SrFe 2 (PO 4 ) 2 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with a โ€ซุโ€ฌ 10.5376(7) A > , b โ€ซุโ€ฌ 6.8529(4) A > , c โ€ซุโ€ฌ 9.3658(6) A > , โ€ซุโ€ฌ 109.498(5)3. The crystal structure of Sr 9 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 7 was re5ned by the Rietveld method: space group R+3m; Z โ€ซุโ€ฌ 3; a โ€ซุโ€ฌ 10.6102(1) A > , c โ€ซุโ€ฌ 19.7135(1) A > with R wp โ€ซุโ€ฌ 3.00% (S โ€ซุโ€ฌ 1.51), R p โ€ซุโ€ฌ 2.35%, R B โ€ซุโ€ฌ 3.44%, R F โ€ซุโ€ฌ 1.72%. A second-harmonic-generation study showed that the structures of these two compounds have a center of symmetry. The crystal structure of Sr 9 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 7 is related to that of -Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and -Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , but is topologically more similar to that of -Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . Tetrahedra P1O 4 and strontium cations in the M3 sites are disordered in the structure of Sr 9 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 7 . The octahedral M5 site is fully occupied and the M4 site is quarter-occupied by iron cations. SrFe 2 (PO 4 ) 2 and Sr 9 Fe 1.5 (PO 4 ) 7 are stable in air up to 750 and 810 K, respectively.

## Abstract A single crystal of the new title compound is synthesized in a flux of Rb~2~Mo~2~O~7~ from a starting mixture of Rb~2~CO~3~, Fe(NO~3~)~3~, (NH~4~)~2~HPO~4~, and MoO~3~ (Pt crucible, 473, 673, and 873 K for 24 h at each temperature).
