β¦ Synopsis
Liquid crystalline polyetheresters with crown ethers in the mesogenic unit have been synthesized using the DB-[ 181-C-6 crown. This compound was then transferred to the diacetyl-, dicarboxy-and dicarboxydichloride derivatives. After incorporation of the crown ether moiety into the mesogens of main chain polymers, the liquid crystalline phase ofthe polymers obtained was observed. The appearance ofan unordered smectic phase (smectic A or smectic C) was proved by combining optical investigations, X-ray diffraction and DSC measurements.
