β¦ Synopsis
Iminodiacetate cellulosic chelating sorbent, derived from cotton fabric, was synthesized in a two-step reaction sequence. The pH dependence of the metal ion extraction for Cd( 11), Co ( I1 ) , Cu ( I1 ) , Pb ( 11) , and Ni ( I1 ) was studied. Under optimum conditions, the average sorptive capacity of the sorbent was found to be 0.38 mmol metal ion/ sorbent. The viability of using this sorbent for recycling, preconcentration of metal ion, and selective metal ion extraction was demonstrated.

Cotton fabric was converted into an ion exchanger by grafting it with (1) glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), followed by aminization with ethylene diamine; (2) dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), followed by quaternization; and (3) acrylic acid (AA). Grafting was carried out on a pilot scale using a
The grafting polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and cellulose from henequen (Agave fourcroydes ) is investigated as a function of the initiator concentration (cerium-and-ammonium nitrate) and the monomer/cellulose ratio. The formation of cellulose-g-PMMA is confirmed by IR spectroscopy, DSC
