✦ Synopsis


A new cobalt phosphate Cs 2 Co 3 (HPO 4 )(PO 4 ) 2 ' H 2 O 1, has been synthesized by hydrothermal reactions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray di4raction, thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic techniques. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1 with a ‫؍‬ 10.4711 (6) A > , b ‫؍‬ 5.1129 (3) A > , c ‫؍‬ 13.5584 (8) A > , ‫؍‬ 109.893 (1)3, V ‫؍‬ 682.57 A > 3 , Z ‫؍‬ 2. Re5nement gave R 1 ‫؍‬ 0.0226, wR 2 ‫؍‬ 0.0583 for 2611 unique observed re6ections (I'2 (I)). The cobalt and phosphorus atoms in 1 are tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms with Co to P ratio of 1. The framework structure of 1 is built up by sharing corners of [Co(PO 4 )] 2 layers and [Co(HPO 4 )] double zigzag chains, which contains in5nite 1-D tunnels, with 16-membered ring channels housing caesium cations and water molecules. Magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that 1 has a canted antiferromagnetic interaction at a transition temperature of about 10 K.
