✦ Synopsis
A new compound, (N,H,),FeF,, has been synthesized from water solutions of N,H,FeF, and N,H,.H,O at appropriate pH. It has been characterized by X-ray powder data, thermal decomposition and vibrational and Mossbauer "Fe spectra and compared with the parent compound, N,H,FeF,. It decomposes at ca 225 'C through an intermediate containing N,H,+ and NH,+ ions in stoichiometric ratio of 1:2 to a product at ca 450 "C which is mostly FeF,. Thermal decomposition of NrH,FeF, [l] is similar. Vibrational spectra indicate two kinds of N2HS+ ions in (N,H,),FeF, and one kind of N2H6*+ ion in N,H,FeF,. Vibrational and Mossbauer spectra (N,H,FeF, [2]) indicate that the anionic parts of both complexes consist of infinite chains of octahedral units connected through F-bridges, [FeF,F,,d, which are appreciably deformed in (N,HS),FeFS and slightly deformed in N,H,FeF,. Ferric ions are in the high spin state in both complexes, as shown by the temperature dependence of isomer shift parameters.
