Nachdem von P. Pfeiffer und H. Oberlinl) der Trimethylather des A n h y d r o -b r a s i l i n s synthetisiert worden war, bot die Darstellung des Tetramethylathers des A n h y d r oh a ma t o x y l i n s (I), welches in recht naher, konstitutioneller Beziehung zum H a m a t o x y l i n (11), dem farbenden Prinzip des Blauholzes, steht, keine prinzipiellen Schwierigkeiten. Man geht vom Pyrogallol-1.2-dimethylather (111) aus, kondensiert den &her rnit -C h l o rp r o p i o n s a u r e zur p -[2.3 -D i m e t h o x y -p h e no x y] -p r o p i o n s a u r e (I') und behandelt das Kondensationsprodukt mit Phosphorpentoxyd. Es entsteht so das 7.8-Dimethoxy-chromanon (V) 2), welches mit V a n i l l i n -m e t h y l a t h e r in saurer oder alkalischer Losung das 3 -[3'. 4'-Dime t ho x yb e nz a 11 -7.8 -d i m e t h o x yc h r o m a n o n (VI) gibt.
