The union of the manubrium with the body of the sternum usually remains throughout life a synchondrosis (synchondrosis sternalis superior), but has been observed with variable incidence to be a synostosis. The question of whether the replacement of the cartilage by bone is correlated with advancing age or whether the type of union is determined during the growth period has been answered by Fick ( '04), Testut ('11) and others, but without unanimity.
