Many of the panel participants had presented in an earlier session of the meeting: "The lactate and glucose riddle," chaired by Herman Bachelard and Mary McKenna. The purpose of the workshop was not to repeat those presentations but to address the central premise, i.e., whether or not lactate serves as an important nutrient for neurons, by considering five more specific questions.
