✦ Synopsis

The consensus committee for the Use of Aerosolized Antibiotics in CF Patients was convened September 21, 1997. The Consensus Conference addressed four major questions and, when possible, evidence-based recommendations were made. The grading of evidence for recommendations follows the United States Preventative Services Task Force system: Grade I -Evidence obtained from at least one properly randomized controlled trial; Grade II-1 -Evidence obtained from welldesigned controlled trials without randomization; Grade II-2 -Evidence obtained from well-designed cohort or case control analytic studies, preferably from more than one center or research group; Grade II-3 -Evidence obtained from multiple time series with or without the intervention. Dramatic results in uncontrolled experiments (such as the results of the introduction of penicillin treatment in the 1940s) could also be regarded as this type of evidence, and; Grade III -Opinions of respected authorities, based on clinical experience, descriptive studies, or reports of expert committees. The following are the recommendations from that consensus conference, but does not include the review and interpretation of the available literature and studies.
