โฆ Synopsis
light absorption in the ultraviolet and visible range, light absorption of a solution in concentrated H2SO4, and determination of the ratio of aromatic hydrogen to aromatic carbon in the unsubstituted aromatic system. The last two methods are new. A coal sample and its pyridine, benzene, and petroleum ether extracts were examined. All samples show polymeric character but with different degrees of polymerhation, and certainly do not consist of only one aromatic system of definite size (Rar), hence only a mean value Ku can be deduced. Comparison of the results from all five methods leads to the very satisfying conclusion that, for the coal and its extracts under investigation Ku -4 f 1. The size of the individual aromatics probably lies between Rar -1 and Ru = 7.
