✦ Synopsis
Chemical and China's Shenhua Group are to jointly undertake a study for coal-to-olefins projects in China. The study will be completed by the end of 2005. Shenhua is China's largest coal producer. The study will determine the best technology for the coal-to-olefins unit, and which product mix and capacities will be most profitable. Syngas produced via coal gasification is one route that Dow will examine. Shenhua is building a coal-liquefaction complex in Inner Mongolia as part of a separate project to convert coal into gasoline and diesel. Dow is also reviewing sites and potential partners in China for a petrochemicals complex with capacity for up to 1 M tonne/y ethylene. It is hoped to have the complex onstream in 2009. It would probably include styrene and PE units, as well as plants for a range of propylene derivatives including acrylic acid. A chloralkali plant is also likely.
