Focus on Germany

German economic activity, which slowed considerably at the end of 1996, has started to gain momentum. Gross domestic product rose by approximately 0.5 per cent in the first quarter of this year after seasonal and price adjustments and despite poor weather conditions at the beginning of the year which affected business activities.
