The section on applications shows how wide-ranging a potential the technique has: reflectance measurements have been successful in analyses of pigments, biological materials, building materials, foodstuffs, geological specimens, paper pulp, pharmaceuticals, etc.
The editor's selection of the topics is excellent. The first review provides background information on spectroscopic hardware that is often hard to come by for the non-specialist. The second review provides a particularly fine account of an immensely successful modem technique, whilst the third review deals with a technique which appears to have real significance for the future.
