The project approach taken by the author of this manual of experiments implies that, rather than performing isolated and independent exercises, students have to work on a project consisting of multiple parts that are based on each other and rely on a variety of methods and techniques. These include transposon mutagenesis, DNA cloning, Southern and Northern analyses, and the polymerase chain reaction. The manual, which addresses undergraduates (and their advisors), provides sufficient background information, thereby suspending the need of reading additional textbooks for understanding the laboratory cours. However, each major methodical complex ends with an extensive list of references from which to choose for further reading. Several appendices and a glossary of molecular biological terms at the end of the manual provide useful supplementary information.
