Computerized plant design
Combustion Engineering Inc (C-E) is to develop a computerized plant design system based on software licenced from ICI. Combustion Engineering will jointly develop the new system with Duke Power Company, which is one of the USA's largest electric utilities.
The licence agreement allows C-E to use, develop and market ICl's software for industrial plant design. The software is the plant modelling system Provue 3D and Isogenj a program that automatically generates piping isometric drawings from Provue models.
Joseph P Morray, Director of the Plant Systems Project at C-E said that the new system would combine the plant modelling capabilities of ICl's software with the plant design experience within Duke Power and C-E. He added that the new system would differ from more traditional CAD systems which are orientated to graphic operations. He said, "Traditional CA D systems are fine for drafting, but they simply can't handle the information demands of designing an entire power or process facility. In order to automate the plant design process, one first has to assemble and manage the engineering information and design rules which are commonly applied to power and process facilities."
C-E said that it will integrate 3D plant modelling with an interactive engineering database of component and material specifications, industry standards and individual design and analysis modules. (Combustion Engineer-
