one on the prolapsed intervertebral disk. This book can be strongly recommended as introductory postgraduate reading on the vertebral column, not least on account of the authors' sober and logical mode of thinking. If this book were translated into English, few would suspect its continental origin. It will appeal particularly to orthopaedic surgeons, but general surgeons will also find much of use to them in this superbly produced volume.
the technique of closed chest cardiac massage and the indications for its application. Special chapters are devoted to drug intoxication, carbon monoxide poisoning, resuscitation of the apparently drowned, paralytic poliomyelitis, and myasthenia gravis. The book is well produced with excellent illustrations and diagrams, and is an invaluable asset to any medical library both private and departmental.
Sitzhaltung-Sitzschaden-Sitzmobel.
By HANS SFOBERTH. 92 x 6) in. Pp. 194+vii, with 131 illustrations. 1962. Berlin: Springer. D.M.48. THE author, an orthopaedic surgeon, has written this monograph to answer three questions : (I) What form does the vertebral column assume when the body is in the sitting position, and by which forces is this determined ?
( 2 ) In which way could the vertebral column and its musculoligamentous covering be damaged by sitting ? and (3) What are characteristics of good chairs ? As the book progresses these questions are gradually answered, in part by the results of the author's extensive and original investigations. It has become a very interesting account, quite welcome in this age of low back pain. The greater part of the book will mainly interest the orthopaedic surgeon, but the last chapter on the characteristics of good chairs is obviously a 'must' for their designers.
