✦ Synopsis
In deriving the differential mass (momentum, moment-of-momentum,.
. .) balance for a moving surface, it is convenient to follow an arbitrary material volume through a deformation and to require that mass (momentum, moment-of-momentum, . . .) be balanced at every instant of time.
But there is a conceptual difficulty in following a volume composed of material particles or in taking a material derivative (an intrinsic derivative with respect to time along the path of a material particle) if mass transfer is taking place simultaneously. In order that definite meaning be given to these operations, a particle of mixture in a moving surface and the material derivative following a particle of mixture in a moving surface are defined for the case of simultaneous diffusion and deformation.
