β¦ Synopsis
Infrared-visible sum-frequency generation has been applied to the vapor/solid interface between acetonitrile and ZrO2. The surface vibrational spectra of the C-N and C-H moieties of submonolayer coverages of acetonitrile adsorbed on ZrO2 in equilibrium with the vapor have been obtained and compared with the surface spectra of the neat liquid/solid interface. Estimates of binding energy and molecular orientation are reported. Spectra of CD3CN, suggest the presence of dimers and clusters on the surface.

We present the first application of infrared-visible sum-frequency generation to studies of liquid/solid interfaces. The spectra in the CH stretch region of a saturated monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) adsorbed at various interfaces bound by a fused silica substrate were measured and comp
