β¦ Synopsis
In order to improve the wettability and adhesion of polyolefins (e.g. polypropylene), we used an oxygen microwave discharge created by surface waves (434 MHz). The sample is placed in the flowing afterglow, so that only the two long-life species (the molecular metastable singlet 02 (a~A) and the atomic oxygen O), ground-state molecular oxygen 0 2 (3z) and plasma UV may react with the surface of the polymer.
The aim of this experiment is first to study the evolution of the surface energy of the polymer vs. plasma parameters (pressure, power, flow and sample-to-discharge distance), secondly to understand the role of every species and finally to find a suitable model.
