✦ Synopsis
u(100), Au(l II)and Au(l10) electr des with rec nstructed surfaces f the type (5 x 20), (1 x 23) and (I x 2), respectively, have been prepared by the s -called flame treatment and their pr perties investigated in vari us electr lytes by electr chemical and ptical meth ds . The rec nstructed ( 100)and ( 111) surfaces are f und t be stable nly in a p tential range where n specific ads rpti n ccurs . The Au(1 W)-(5 x 20) surface has ptical pr perties which are distinctly different fr m th se f the unrec nstructed Au(100)-(1 x 1). This difference was used t m nit r by in situ spectr sc py the ads rbate-induced (5 x 20) -, (I x 1) transiti n, in rder t btain inf rmati n n the transiti n kinetics . F r a certain fracti n f the surface, electr chemically induced rec nstructi n, (1 x 1) -. (5 x 20) and (1 x 1)-9(1 x 23), has been bserved f r Au(l00) and Au(l11) . The p tentials f zer charge f the rec nstructed surfaces have been determined and are c mpared with th se f the unrec nstructed nes.
