โœฆ Synopsis

Surface modification methods can optimise the biocompatibility or the specificity of biointeraction of a biosensor or medical device. With only the surface modified, the manufacture and implantation protocol remain unchanged. This review article summarises some of the chemical, surface analytical and biological challenges associated with surface modification of biosensors and biomedical devices.

The surface of implantable biomaterials is in direct contact with the host tissue and plays a critical role in determining biocompatibility. In order to improve the integration of implants, it is desirable to control interfacial reactions such that nonspecific adsorption of proteins is minimized and

## Abstract Surface analytical and optoelectrochemical measurements were used to clarify the ionic, spectral and electronic changes during oxidation in 3 N NClO~4~ of electrochemically formed polycarbezole. The differences in band structure at various potentials could be shown using XPS and UPS mea
