✦ Synopsis

The surface modification of glycol methacrylate intraocular lenses by selective alkaline hydrolysis was studied in order to find the conditions for improvement in biocompatibility and simultaneous preservation of good optical properties of these gels. It was found that the thickness of the modified layer can be influenced by the reaction temperature, NaOH concentration and reaction time. Using at least 30% NaOH, short reaction times and temperatures of at least 90 °C, lenses with good optical properties and with carboxylic groups in the surface layer were prepared. The method may be useful for obtaining hydrophilic medical materials with improved properties and increased biocom patibility.

Homopolymers of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate ( HPMA) and copolymers with acrylic acid (AA) were prepared in 1,4-dioxane. The reactivity ratios were determined to be rAA = 0.27 k 0.04 and rHkpMA = 2.2 + 0.2. The alkaline hydrolysis by sodium hydroxide of the HPMA monomer and polymers showed that whil
