✦ Synopsis

The clay mineral montmorillonite was transformed into its phenyl derivative by treatment with thionyl chloride followed by reaction with benzene in the presence of aluminium chloride.

The phenyl montmorillonite was degraded by the action of dilute sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. Silicon-organic degradation products soluble in organic solvents were isolated and fractionated by chromatography on aluminium oxide. The infrared spectra of the fractions obtained were studied. Phenyl groups linked to silicon could be detected. The exact constitution of the degradation products is not yet established.

The preparation and degradation of organic derivatives of silicates seems to be a useful method for the elucidation of the chemical constitution of silicate surfaces, e.g. for the determination of surface silanol groups.
