✦ Synopsis

Recent progress in cryogenics and in material science make experiments at temperatures very close to absolute zero possible. This article reports on experiments which were aimed at answering the question whether all metallic elements will either order magnetically or become superconducting if they are refrigerated to sufficiently low temperatures. For this purpose, the noble metals Au, Ag, Cu, and the platinum metals Rh, Pd, Pt have been investigated at mikrokelvin temperatures.
