## Abstract We experimentally investigate the cladding mode coupling loss of fiber Bragg gratings written in holeβassisted fibers. The cladding mode coupling loss is remarkably suppressed due to air holes inside of the silica cladding. The reduction of cladding mode coupling loss of less than βΌ0.33

The effect on the Bragg-grating-induced cladding-mode coupling of varying the extent of the photosensitive region in a step-index fiber is analyzed. We introduce a figure of merit for the suppression of cladding-mode loss and compare different matched cladding fiber designs. It is found to be advant
We demonstrate a novel technique for generating tuneable complex field distributions for controllable coupling to high-order guided modes of micro-structured fibres. The optical Fourier transform of grating-based phase patterns, which are encoded on a computer-controlled spatial light modulator, gen
