✦ Synopsis
This work exposes the complete procedure of suppressing the chatter of a machine centre without detailing each design step. The frequency of chatter of a machine centre was found by cutting a workpiece with increasing cutting depth. The weak component of the machine structure was then found by vibration testing. The vibration test showed that the spindle was the main weak component. A sensitivity analysis was then performed to optimise the spindle structure, and a new spindle was manufactured according to the optimisation result. The cutting capability of the machine centre with the new spindle was proved by a cutting test. The result showed more than a 100% improvement in cutting capability was achieved.
