Superpositions of di erent statistics on di erent time or spatial scales (in short, superstatistics) can naturally lead to an e ective description by nonextensive statistical mechanics. We ÿrst discuss the role of escort distributions within the superstatistical framework, and then brie y describe recent physical applications of this concept to turbulent and pattern forming systems.
