✦ Synopsis

Well developed single crystals of the mercury compound HgBa2Ca2Cu3OS+d have been obtained in single step synthesis under normal pressure conditions. Samples in the submillimeter range give a sizeable diamagnetic signal which allowed a systematic study of the magnetization anisotropy both before and after annealing in oxygen. After annealing, single crystals displayed a sharp superconducting transition temperature with an onset at 135 K. The direct determination by X-rays of the annealed crystal structure was carried out in addition to the analysis of the changes in the diffraction spectrum associated with the annealing process and the improvement of the transition temperature.

Samples of HgBa2Ca2Cu3Os.6 were successfully prepared and investigated. By examining the X-ray diffraction, mission electron microscopy, magnetization and resistivity, we found that HgBa2CaaCusOs+8 possesses an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters o--5.451(2) A, b=5.432(2) ,~ and c= 15.826

X-ray diffraction analyses of good-quality single crystals of HgBa2Ca2Cu3Os+8, synthetized by a closed-vessel technique at low pressure, have lead to more definite results with respect to previous structural studies. Samples with T c = 135 K showed a Cu occupancy of 16.1% on the Hg site at the origi

Bulk superconducting samples of nearly phase-pure HgBa2Ca2CuaOs + 6 (hereafter denoted as Hg-1223 ) were prepared by a solid-state reaction of stoichiometric quantities of HgO, BaO, CaO and CuO in a single step. The starting mixtures were ground, pressed into a pellet, sealed in a quartz tube, and h
