**Electrospun nanofibers of polyacrylonitrile**, containing an iron compound, have been converted to carbon nanofibers, with iron particles on their surfaces. The iron particles catalyze the growth of carbon nanotubes with iron tips (see Figure). A mechanically strong and electrically conducting pat
