β¦ Synopsis
differ in any substantial way from that of the familar d-block species except for the obvious fact that the 18-electron rule will be flagrantly violated! Carbonyls o f the transuranium elements are unknown presently : however, Nash and Bursten have recently predicted that the hexacarbonyl of zerovalent element 106, a member of the chromium family, should electronically resemble [W(CO),] much more th;in the extremely unstable [U(CO),J.[2'1
In summary. over the past two years our knowledge of relatively stable neutral carbonyl complexes has been dramatically enriched by the synthesis of the first metalloidal and alkaline earth metal carbonyls in solution, namely [CpySi(CO)] and [CpTCa(CO)]. respectively. and by the isolation and X-ray structural characterization of the first f-block carbonyl complex. [(C',Me,H),U(CO)]. Undoubtedly, these remarkable new result5 will stimulate much new basic "curiosity-driven" research in a field that continues to provide excitement and drama!
