✦ Synopsis

We study the deconfinement phase transition in XI(N) gauge theories for N=2,3,4,6,8. The transition is first order for N 2 3, with the strength increasing as N increases. We extra.polate T,/fi to the continuum limit for each N, and observe a rapid approach to the large N limit. As N increases the phase transition becomes clear-cut on smaller spatial volumes, indicating the absence of (non-singular) finite volume corrections at N = 00 reminiscent of large N reduction.

The observed rapid increase of the inter-phase surface tension with N may indicate that for N = co the deconfinement transition cannot, in practise, occur.

A constraint correlation dynamics up to 4-point Green functions is proposed for \(\operatorname{SU}(N)\) gauge theories which reduces the \(N\)-body quantum field problem to the two-body level. The resulting set of nonlinear coupled equations fulfills all conservation laws including fermion number,

## Two-dimensional gauge theories with diagonal SU(N) color symmetry are analyzed in the limit of strong coupling using bosonization techniques. A spectrum of heavy mesons is found in addition to a spectrum of light baryon and baryonium states. Exotic behavior is also found for various values of t

We study the dependence of the free energy on the CP violating angle 19, in four-dimensional SU(iY) gauge theories with N 2 3, and in the large-N limit. Using the Wilson lattice formulation for numerical simulations, we compute the first few terms of the expansion of the ground-state energy F(0) aro

We address the question of whether the low modes of the Dirac operator are caused by topological objects such as instantons in SU(N) gauge theories. We study the pseudo-scalar density of these modes, finding the size distributions of the instantons, and comparing it with the underlying gauge field.
