โฆ Synopsis
HE CHAIRMAN OF THE COLON CANCER
T Workshop, in opening the meeting, noted that in the United States among both sexes the incidence of large bowel cancer is greater than that of any other cancer. He noted that n o significant progress has been made in the treatment of large bowel cancer and that research on the biology and treatment of this neoplastic disease has been minimal. On the other hand, research in the areas of lymphomas and leukemias has been many times greater; there have been major advances made in the management of these diseases.
T h e first presentation was made by Dr. John W. Berg. He noted that large bowel cancer is the most common of the major cancers occurring in the United States, and that the incidence of large bowel cancer i n the United States exceeds that of all other nations excepting New Zealand. He noted that the incidence of colon cancer among the Japanese living in Japan is very low, whereas among the second and third generations of Japanese migrants to Hawaii or the continental United States the incidence is approximately the same as that of Caucasians living in the United States.
