✦ Synopsis

Microbial synthesis of methanol

A mixture of methane, oxygen, and nitrogen are fed to a fixed-bed bioreactor containing Methylocadum bacteria. The process operates at 50°a nd atmospheric pressure, releasing methanol vapour. Methanol is recovered by condensation and unreacted methane is recycled. The process is being developed by Osaka Gas Co and Kansai Research Institute and may prove useful for producing methanol from stranded natural gas wells.
