✦ Synopsis

The inhibition of the oxygen-induced (2x I ) reconstruction of the Ni{ 110) surface by sulfur impurities has been investigated by time-of-flight scattering and recoiling spectrometry (TOF-SARS). The data indicate that sulfur inhibits the diffusion of Ni atoms in the "added-row" reconstruction, presenting a kinetic barrier to the thermodynamically stable Ni( 110)-(2x 1)-O phase.
