✦ Synopsis

This article provides an overview o f the literature on the subtyping of specific reading disabilities. The foundation for such subtyping is presented, with particular emphasis on how the rationale for a multidimensional conceptualization of reading problems evolved. Two broad-band classification approaches are described and several illustrative reading subtyping efforts are highlighted. The current status of reading disability subtyping efforts is described, underscoring recent research findings relative t o dyslexia and subtyping. In addition, discussion focuses on continuing dilemmas facing clinicians and researchers working from a multidimensional conceptualization o f reading disabilities. I conclude by addressing progress toward attaining an operational reading disability classification system.
