✦ Synopsis
The width as well as the peak position of the fluorescence spectrum of bcarotene in isopentane has been found to depend on the excitation photon energy. This result is interpreted in terms of a new kind of dynamic Stokes shift, i.e. the competition between the energy relaxation in the excited state and the population relaxation from the excited state to the ground state on a subpicosecond time scale in p-carotene molecules without change in the configuration of the surroundmg solvent molecules. The parameter values to explain the experimental data have been found to be consistent with those obtained from the analysis of the excitation spectra for Raman scattering and fluorescence.
