โฆ Synopsis
Submicrosecond time-resolved infrared spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of the photoinduced transient species of salicylideneaniline (N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)aniline) in acetonitrile. Time-resolved infrared spectra were measured in the wavenumber region 1700-I200 cm-' and in the time range O-9000 ns. Only one transient species was detected in this time range. The observed "N and 'so shifts of the infrared spectra were ascribable neither to a quinoid form nor to a zwitterion form. This suggests that the transient species in acetonitrile has a hybrid structure in between the quinoid and the zwitterion forms.
