✦ Synopsis

Adab works of the classical Arabic tradition claim to form the person; hence they resonate with contemporary theoretical interest in the construction of subjectivity, or the self. The early adab works of 'Abdallah Ibn al-Muqaffa' (d. 757 CE) construct a vulnerable subjectivity that requires protection through the attainment of proficiency in the Arabic language. In so doing, they confirm and enliven those aspects of contemporary literary theory which argue that subjectivity is constructed in relation to authority.
