โฆ Synopsis
We consider in this paper the optical, sub-Doppler, high resolution absorption spectra of a mixture of two different kinds of gases. The gases are neutral, and we allow for interaction between molecules of the same gas and also interaction between molecules of different gases. Those interactions are restricted to binary collisions and they are treated in the so-called impact approximation. The high resolution spectrum is observed when two counterpropagating laser beams pass through the gas mixture. One beam is strong and it saturates the transition to several different degrees. The other one is a weak probe beam absorbed by the saturated system of the gas mixture. The laser beams are supposed to have arbitrary frequencies and to be linearly polarized. An appropriate parametrizing procedure for treating this problem is considered taking into account all the physical quantities involved.
