✦ Synopsis

The hydration of 2BaO.SiO. . 2 was studied with temperature, watersolids ratio and addltlves as reaction variables and the rate and mechanism were discussed The rate of hydration of 2BaO-SiO 2 is affected markedly by the temperature and a maximum rate exists at some point between 20 and 35°C. The hydration seems to proceed via liquid phase reaction with nucleation and crystal growth acting as a rate-determining process. The hydration of 2BaO.Si02 is suppressed to an extreme degree by addition of CaO. The heat of hydration of 2BaO.Si02 is 21.0 Kcal/mol.
