✦ Synopsis
Optical absorption, ESR spectra, thermoluminescence, infrared spectra and dielectric properties (constant e 0 ; loss tan d and AC conductivity over a range of frequency and temperature and dielectric breakdown strength) of Li 2 O-MO-B 2 O 3 (MO ¼ MgO; CaO, SrO, BaO) glasses containing 1% of V 2 O 5 have been investigated. The results have been analyzed in the light of different oxidation states of vanadium ions in the glass matrix; the analysis indicates that there is an increasing presence of vandyl ðVO 2þ Þ ions that take part modifier positions in the glass network, when the lighter modifier ion Mg 2þ is successively replaced by Ca 2þ ; Sr 2þ and Ba 2þ ions.
