Abstract
The maxim tolerance of polarization‐mode dispersion (PMD) in transmission systems at different rates is analyzed in this paper for the first time. The PMD of two transmission systems are measured and analyzed for dispersion compensation through conventional single‐mode fiber (G.652) with fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The results show that PMD compensation in the 10‐Gb/s transmission system is not necessary, but the PMD must be compensated in the 40‐Gb/s transmission system. We compensate it by using a short length of polarization maintain fiber (PMF), and obtain good results. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
